Canada’s commitment to United Nations peacekeeping is declining at a time when UN operations have increased and the need is greater than ever.

As of July 2012, Canada’s contribution of uniformed personnel to UN peace operations ranked 55th in the world, with the Canadian Forces providing only 35 personnel and Canada’s police forces contributing 118. UN peace operations provide unparalleled legitimacy to international efforts. Canadians, as shown in many polls, continue to support peacekeeping.

The winding down of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan provides additional opportunities for Canada to contribute to UN peace operations, where they are urgently needed by the world community.
